Beautiful hand-carved and hand-painted wooden religious relief depicting the Holy Family - Saint Joseph, the Virgin Mary, and the Christ Child - beneath a radiant arch.

The piece is deeply carved from a substantial block of wood with openwork surrounding the figures. It retains layers of polychrome decoration in warm gold/yellow, red, blue, green and dark brown tones. The sides and reverse also retain painted decoration.

The composition and construction are reminiscent of traditional Spanish Colonial, Mexican and Hispanic devotional folk art, including carved and polychromed Holy Family figures made for religious and domestic devotional settings. Similar historic examples were executed in wood with gesso and painted pigments.

Antique/vintage condition with substantial age-related surface wear, paint and gilding loss, cracking/crazing, abrasions, small losses and accumulated patina throughout. Please examine all photographs carefully as they are an important part of the condition description.

The exact age, country of origin and maker are unknown. Based on its construction and imagery, it appears consistent with traditional European/Latin American Christian folk-art forms, but no definitive attribution is being made.
